How to edit a PDF without confusing overlays and text editing
Updated September 30, 2026
Editing a PDF can mean adding a date, filling a form or rewriting an entire paragraph. Those tasks need different workflows. This browser editor adds objects on top of pages; it does not change the original text in place. Choose your method before making corrections so the downloaded file does what you expect.
Add text, pictures and marks
Open Edit PDF, add the file and wait for the page previews. Choose text, image, drawing or a shape, then place it on a page. Adjust position, size and colour, and use undo if necessary. Save a new PDF and reopen it to check the result.
An overlay is useful for adding a date or a note to a flat form. The editor uses standard Latin PDF fonts for text objects. For Arabic or other unsupported scripts, prepare the wording as an image in another application and insert that image instead.
Fill an interactive form correctly
If the PDF already has real text fields, checkboxes or lists, use Fill PDF Form rather than drawing over the page. Test the downloaded copy to confirm the values are visible. A flat form with no interactive fields instead needs text or marks added through the editor. Flattening is a separate operation that fixes field appearances; keep an editable original if you still need changes.
Rewrite existing text with the right source
This editor cannot click into an existing paragraph and replace its words. For substantial rewriting, request the original Word document or convert a text-based PDF to Word. Conversion reconstructs text and may require you to rebuild tables, images and formatting. A scanned document needs OCR first, with the language-specific output limitations explained in the scanned-PDF guide.
A white rectangle is not redaction
Covering an outdated figure and adding a new one can provide a visual correction, but the old text remains in the PDF underneath. It may still be copied or recovered. Do not use this approach to remove private information. Redact PDF is the separate tool intended for destructive removal; verify the exported copy and preserve your original securely.
Adding a drawn signature is also different from creating a cryptographic digital signature. Do not assume that changing a signed PDF preserves its existing signature validity; check the file with the recipient's required workflow.
Check the saved copy
Reopen the output, inspect every edited page and compare it with the source. Look for displaced objects, clipped text and accidental changes of page selection. Confirm that form fields and any marks appear at the expected size. The editor runs in your browser without uploading the document, but large files still depend on your device memory.
- Keep the source unchanged and give the edited copy a distinct name.
- Use actual redaction for confidential information, not a cover shape.
- Check the downloaded PDF rather than relying only on the preview.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace the existing PDF text here?
No. Edit PDF adds new objects above the page. Use the original source or a Word conversion for substantial rewriting, and expect to review formatting.
Does covering text with white remove it?
No. The underlying text remains. Use the dedicated redaction tool for confidential content and check its exported result.
Which tool should I use for a PDF form?
Use Fill PDF Form for existing interactive fields. Use Edit PDF to add text and marks to flat forms that have no fields.
