Converting to PDF: which tool for which file

Images are the easiest case. JPG to PDF, PNG to PDF and Images to PDF place each picture on a page without recompressing JPG or PNG files, and Scan to PDF adds camera capture on phones. Text to PDF and Markdown to PDF build simple documents from pasted text, but they support Latin-script characters only: Arabic, Chinese and emoji are replaced with a question mark.

Word to PDF, Excel to PDF and PowerPoint to PDF handle office files (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx and their older or open equivalents) and run on our server with LibreOffice. Fonts that are not installed there are substituted, so line breaks and layout can shift slightly compared with Microsoft Office. HTML to PDF also runs on the server and never fetches external images, stylesheets or fonts, so embed images in the HTML and expect JavaScript not to run.

Converting from PDF: what you get back

Turning a PDF into an editable file means guessing structure from positioned text. PDF to Word rebuilds paragraphs and headings from the text it finds, but does not reproduce columns, tables, images or exact fonts. PDF to Excel detects rows and columns by alignment and works best on text-based tables such as invoices and statements, without borders or merged cells. PDF to PowerPoint puts each page on a slide as an image, so slides are not editable text boxes.

For text, PDF to Text, PDF to HTML and PDF to Markdown pull out the text layer in simple forms. To get pictures, use PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG or PDF to Images to render whole pages, or Extract Images from PDF to save only the embedded photos and logos. Rendering turns text into pixels; extracting takes the original images as they are.

Scanned PDFs and where each conversion runs

If a PDF is a scan, it holds pictures of pages and no text, so PDF to Word, PDF to Excel, PDF to Text and the other text-based converters will find nothing. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert. The same applies to Compare PDF.

Every conversion from PDF and the image, text and Markdown conversions to PDF run in your browser, so the file is not uploaded. Only Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, PowerPoint to PDF and HTML to PDF use the server; files are uploaded over HTTPS, processed temporarily and deleted automatically after the result is delivered, with a 50 MB limit.

Frequently asked questions

Which converter should I use to edit a PDF in Word?

Use PDF to Word. It rebuilds paragraphs and headings so you can edit the text, but complex layouts, columns, tables and images will not be reproduced exactly. If the PDF is a scan, run OCR PDF first.

Will my Word document look identical as a PDF?

Usually very close, but not always identical. Word to PDF uses LibreOffice, which substitutes fonts it does not have, so layout can shift slightly. Complex layouts, macros and embedded objects may not convert perfectly.

Why does PDF to Word return an empty or missing text result?

The PDF is most likely a scan, which contains images of text instead of real text. Run OCR PDF to create a text layer, then convert the searchable result.

Are my files uploaded during conversion?

Only for Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, PowerPoint to PDF and HTML to PDF, which need office software on our server and delete files automatically after delivery. Every other converter works in your browser and does not upload the file.

Can I convert PDF to Word without losing formatting?

Not completely. PDF stores positioned text rather than a document structure, so any converter has to guess. Simple documents with headings and paragraphs convert well; layouts with columns, tables and many images will need manual clean-up.
