How to choose the right tool

Ask what the finished file should look like. If the content is right but the pages are wrong (order, rotation, unwanted pages), you need an organizing tool. If the content is right but the file is too big for an email or a portal, you need a compression tool. If you need a different file type, you need a converter. If the words themselves must change, you need an editing tool.

When two tools seem to fit, pick the narrower one. Delete PDF Pages, Extract PDF Pages and Rotate PDF all do things Organize PDF can also do, but they show only the controls for that one job, which makes mistakes less likely. Organize PDF is the better choice when you want to do several things at once, such as reorder, rotate and delete in one pass.

  • Pages in the wrong order or orientation: Organize PDF, Rotate PDF, Reverse PDF Pages.
  • File too large: Compress PDF, or PDF to Grayscale for color scans.
  • Need Word, Excel, images or text: the converters, described in the PDF converter overview.
  • Need to type, sign or fill something in: Edit PDF, Sign PDF or Fill PDF Form.
  • Scanned pages you cannot search or copy from: OCR PDF.

The categories at a glance

Organize covers everything that changes which pages a file contains and how they are arranged, from Merge PDF and Split PDF to Crop PDF and PDF Booklet. Optimize deals with file size and file health: Compress PDF, Flatten PDF, Repair PDF and Web Optimize PDF. Convert moves content between PDF and other formats in both directions.

Edit adds things on top of pages, such as text, signatures, page numbers and watermarks. Security covers passwords, metadata and hidden content. OCR turns scanned images of text into real text. A small set of utilities, PDF Information and Compare PDF, help you inspect a file or see what changed between two versions.

What browser processing means

Nearly every tool here runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. The file is read from your device, processed in memory and offered back as a download; it is not uploaded to us. The trade-off is that your device does the work, so very large files are limited by available memory, and the interface refuses files above 200 MB or PDFs above 2,000 pages.

Four converters, Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, PowerPoint to PDF and HTML to PDF, need office software and run on our server instead. Those files are uploaded over HTTPS, processed in a temporary private folder and deleted automatically once the result is delivered. Each tool page states which mode it uses.

Frequently asked questions

Which PDF tool should I use if I am not sure?

Start with the result you want. Use Compress PDF for a smaller file, Merge PDF or Split PDF to change how many files you have, and Organize PDF to reorder or delete pages. If the file will not open at all, try Repair PDF first.

Do I need an account to use these tools?

No. There is no sign-up and no login, and the tools do not add a watermark to your results. The site may show ads that help pay for hosting.

Are my files uploaded when I use a tool?

For nearly all tools, no: the work happens in your browser and the file stays on your device. Only Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, PowerPoint to PDF and HTML to PDF use our server, where files are processed temporarily and deleted automatically.

Can I use several tools on the same file?

Yes, and it is often the best approach. Download the result of one tool and open it in the next. A common order is to organize pages first, then edit, then compress last, because compressing early can be undone by later changes.
